Subject: Excellent recording, Flawless Performance
I may not be the biggest fan of this tour/era, but this is an excellent recording of a flawless show. Billy is clearly into it from the very beginning, throwing vocal adlibs into songs, and having better enthusiasm overall compared to most of the other shows from this tour (with the possible exception being the show from Roskilde 6/28, which is also up there with this one as contender for best-of-tour).
Given how similar all of the setlists on this tour are, it can be hard to pinpoint what makes one show stand out over the other. Could part of what makes this one really take off from the get go be that at this show they pushed Zero up earlier in the set, just after Where Boys Fear to Tread, in the spot where they normally played the moodier Eye at every other show on the tour? Was that it, did they just need to frontload the set with a little bit more energy before getting into the mellower songs?
Whatever it is, there are many highlights, including Billy laughing through the lyrics of TAFH after his excellent guitar solo, the unique jam at the end of that song (different, and better than the meandering one they played in Portugal), Billy screaming the intro lyrics to Bullet with Butterfly Wings (only time he did on this tour), a flawless Muzzle, Billy shouting "Look out!" after the "This is how her garden grows!" line in XYU, and excellent versions of pretty much every other song in the set.
The recording here is so good that you might think it's a soundboard. A pity that it was the performance from the night before that ended up getting filmed. Footage from this gig in Torhout would've made for a definitive document of the era.
